A diesel system that performs normally when cold but changes after prolonged heavy operation presents a thermal diagnostic problem.

Fuel temperature should be considered alongside pressure and contamination.

Diesel Fuel Absorbs Heat

Fuel may gain heat from:

  • injectors;
  • high-pressure pump;
  • engine compartment;
  • return circuit.

Many systems continuously return unused fuel, allowing temperature to increase during long operating periods.

Fuel Cooling Is a Separate Function

A fuel cooler may reduce this thermal load.

The system can therefore have:

adequate fuel flow

but

inadequate fuel cooling.

A cooler can remain hydraulically open while losing heat-transfer performance.
