Turbo boost describes pressure.

It does not by itself describe intake-air temperature or oxygen mass.

For intercooled diesel engines, charge-air cooling is another important operating variable.

Compression Raises Air Temperature

When the turbocharger compresses intake air, temperature increases.

The charge-air cooler removes part of this heat before the air enters the cylinders.

Pressure and Temperature Must Be Separated

A cooler with restricted external airflow may still pass air internally.

Boost pressure can therefore remain relatively normal while heat rejection deteriorates.

Possible external causes include:

  • mud;
  • dust;
  • debris;
  • bent fins;
  • poor cooling airflow.

Why Air Density Matters

At the same pressure, hotter intake air generally has lower density than cooler air.

The engine-management system may compensate depending on its architecture, but cooling performance remains relevant to combustion and thermal load.

Build a Temperature Map

Useful observations may include:

  • ambient temperature;
  • intake-air temperature;
  • boost;
  • cooler inlet/outlet temperature where available;
  • cooler cleanliness.
