Solenoid common rail injectors combine electrical actuation with hydraulic movement.

Because of this, a correct electrical resistance measurement does not prove that the nozzle needle responds at the intended speed.

Follow the Complete Actuation Chain

A simplified sequence is:

ECU driver current → Solenoid → Control valve → Internal pressure change → Needle movement

Resistance testing evaluates the electrical winding.

It does not directly test every downstream hydraulic step.

Static Resistance Has a Narrow Purpose

A resistance measurement can help identify conditions such as:

  • open winding;
  • shorted winding;
  • abnormal electrical resistance.

But it cannot determine:

  • control-valve response speed;
  • internal hydraulic restriction;
  • needle opening delay;
  • small-quantity delivery behavior.

Why Small Injection Events Matter

Pilot or other small injection events operate over short time windows.

A hydraulic mechanism that responds slowly may therefore affect small-quantity delivery even if the coil itself is electrically acceptable.

Dynamic Diagnosis Is More Useful

Depending on available equipment, useful evidence can include:

  • injector current waveform;
  • cylinder contribution;
  • bench response;
  • commanded vs delivered quantity;
  • control-valve condition.

The important principle is to separate:

electrical command

from

hydraulic completion of the command.
